AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Chinglish

Oh language barriers. Why haven't the technologically savvy invented a way to overcome language barriers yet? I'd venture to guess it's because the comedy that results from culture clash and misunderstandings is too hysterical for anyone to ever eliminate. However, we must face the fact that the world is full of wonderful, and often comical, diversity.

The new Broadway show Chinglish, which opens XX, seeks to explore what happens when an American business man seeks to start a business in China and doesn't speak Chinese. To make matters worse, he's falling in love with the one girl he definitely can't have.

Here's a video explaining a bit more about the show and some perspectives from the cast :

  13. I've had some interesting culture clash stories but one of the best was recently in Mexico City when someone I work with wanted more of our USBs from NY that are shaped look like lipstick. My co-worker started asking me for lipstick...needless to say I was confused!

  15. My mother grew up & had her schooling in Hong Kong. She speaks English perfectly fine but with a mixed Chinese/British accent. I'm always correcting her in her pronunciation of words... then one day she asked me to pass her a sheet of paper, except with the way she says it she was actually asking me for a s*** of paper. Instead of correcting her I just busted out laughing in her face. To this day she still can't say "sheet" without me laughing at her.

  19. I had some major culture clash when I first moved to England from California as a kid, but it was more painful than funny, lol; kids mocked me mercilessly for my American accent among other things. I also stood out like hell once we moved from there to Hong Kong, where I was a tall, blonde girl in a sea of Asians. :) Hmm, drawing a blank when it comes to funny stories, though! Oh, well, I do suppose it's funny that when I moved back to the States after all this, I was befuddled by all the Bart Simpson stuff I saw everywhere - Simpsons mania was huge in the U.S., but we hadn't had it in Hong Kong, so I had no idea who Bart was or what all the "don't have a cow, dude" catchphrases meant!

  24. I think my funniest culture clash story (and timely too) was while I was an exchange student in Madrid I got into an argument with a girl in a nightclub over how to pronounce the name of the band R.E.M.

I insisted that the letters be named individually (in English or Spanish) and she insisted that it was pronounced like a word like REM sleep.

    Comedy ensued

  40. My funniest culture clash story is one day passing by the Empire State Building, I met a family who could barely get out a word of English. I stood with them while they talked to me with hand motions and crazy facial expressions. It took another 6 people passing by to figure out together with me that they were searching for a bathroom. As soon as we figured that out, they bowed their heads and ran in desperation for that bathroom!

  44. Culture clash? Oh so many. I'll start small: In elementary school we had an bi-annual roller rink party and it was the event of the winter and spring season---all the kids would go, feast on pizza and pose silly in the photo booth. Unfortunately, I was never once able to go. Why? Because my mom wouldn't let me skip one day of Greek school, even after seven years.
