Buy a Cookie from Your Favorite Broadway Star

Disclosure: I LOVE Schmakary's. I've tried at least half of their cookie flavors and merely walking into their shop and inhaling the aromas of fresh-baked cookies makes me smile. I also love their strong ties to the local Broadway community.

Schmackary's Logo

So it only makes sense that if they were going to do a fundraiser, it would be for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS--a wonderful organization that practically all of the Broadway productions get behind twice a year to raise money for people afflicted with the terrible disease.

Join them for the third annual BROADWAY BAKES 2015, and come watch your favorite Broadway stars play cookie peddlers just for you! From May 25-29, 2015, from 3-7pm, over 20 of the biggest names on Broadway (Audra McDonald came last year!) will join together to work behind the counter at Schmackary’s selling delicious cookies.

Half the proceeds from cookies sales and 100-percent of the tips generated while the Broadway stars are working at Schmackary’s will go directly to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Over the last 2 years, this event has helped raise more than $25,000 for the organization.

Here are some photos from last year:

Homemade Pasta for Your Pre-Theater Prix-Fixe

Anyone who has ever tried to find a delicious, non-chain, affordable restaurant in the Theater District for a pre-show meal knows that this isn't always an easy feat. Ninth avenue has some great options but storefronts change seemingly every week so you don't always know what to trust. Olive Garden is a definite NO. And Restaurant Row has become so overrun with tourists that you'd rather just avoid it altogether.

I was recently invited to try the newly-opened Torino Italian (1700 Broadway, entrance on 53rd Street) for my own pre-show meal (we saw Side Show...highly recommended!!), and it did not disappoint. A contemporary Italian trattoria open for a few months now, Torino is the vision of David Sasson, known for opening both Marseille in Hell’s Kitchen, Barbounia in Flatiron, and the new Pavilion restaurant in Union Square. At the helm is Consulting Chef Carlo Bigi, a Torino native who most recently worked at Il Principe at the Hugo Hotel and Sant Ambroeus.

Walking in, I was instantly intrigued by the decor. Unique chandeliers and light fixtures bounced ambiance off of curving wooden shelves lined with wine bottles. That said, the tables are arranged in a way that makes it very easy to plop a fellow diner on the head if you are carrying a large bag/coat (with my pack mule tendencies, that seems to ALWAYS be me). So just be weary of that.

For dinner, we started with two appetizers: Meatball Crostini served in a cast iron pan ($9) and the Insalata Torino with kale, ricotta salata, fennel, olives, and cherry tomatoes ($15). The meatballs were pretty perfect, and I loved how they were served, with plenty of melted parmesan and crispy bread to scoop everything up with. The salad was super refreshing. I recently learned from my boyfriend's Italian family that fennel has a special palate cleansing place on in a meal so it fit right into this delicious salad.

Meatball Crostini ($9)
Insalata Torino ($15)

For the main course, I opted for a classic. Cacio e Pepe ($16) is one of my favorite ways to have homemade pasta prepared as you can really taste the quality of the noodles without having to fight through a heavy sauce. This version was perhaps a little heavier than I would have liked (more like an alfredo sauce), but I enjoyed every last bite of the al dente pasta. My friend had one of our waiter's favorites, the Lasagna di Melanzane ($19) with eggplant, tomato and provola. Talk about decadent! This dish came out steaming hot--and remained that way throughout most of the meal due to the insulation of the serving dish--and had a great balance of richness (cheese) and flavor (tomato).

Cacio e Pepe ($16)

Lasanga di Melanzane ($19)

We had to run to our show so didn't get to sample dessert (although honestly I was so full, that was likely a good thing). However, if you leave a little bit more time and room, try their newly launched prix-fixe menu:

Lunch: 11am-4pm (includes 2 courses for $24 or 3 for $29)

Appetizers:
  • Insalata Torino (Kale, ricotta salata, fennel, olives & cherry tomatoes)
  • Meatball Crostini (veal & beef, tomato sauce, parmesan & toasted ciabatta)
  • Soup of the day
Entrees:
  • Oven Roasted Rosemary Chicken (lemon caramelized stuffed with rosemary, spring vegetables)
  • Fusilli Pesto (string beans, potatoes, toasted pine nuts)
  • Salmone Scozzese (asparagus, mache farro salad, pickled red onions)
Dessert:
  • Choice of dessert from the regular menu

Dinner: 3 courses for $39

Appetizers:
  • Insalata Torino (Kale, ricotta salata, fennel, olives & cherry tomatoes)
  • Meatball Crostini (veal & beef, tomato sauce, parmesan & toasted ciabatta)
  • Crispy artichoke
Entrees:
  • Hanger Steak (sautéed broccoli rabe, polenta & pepperoncino)
  • Oven Roasted Rosemary Chicken (lemon caramelized stuffed with rosemary, spring vegetables)
  • Fusilli Pesto (string beans, potatoes, toasted pine nuts)
  • Salmone Scozzese (asparagus, mache farro salad, pickled red onions)
Dessert:
  • Choice of dessert from the regular menu

For reservations call 212-757-2233 or visit torinoitalian.com.

Celebrate The Bard's 450th Birthday 80's Style

Shakespeare may have once said all the world's a stage, but in Like You Like It, a brilliant musical adaptation of As You Like It that takes place in the 1985, all the world's a mall!

A HUGE Broadway cast is coming together for one night only to perform a concert presentation of Like You Like It this Wednesday 4/23 at 9:30 pm at 54 Below (254 W. 54th St, Cellar), Broadway's Supper Club. The ensemble includes Laura Osnes (Cinderella), Sam Underwood (Homeland), Jenna Leigh Green (Wicked), Max Crumm (Grease), Kate Rockwell (Rock of Ages), Amy Spanger (Elf), and Nic Rouleau (Book of Mormon).

I must admit that I have a personal tie to the show and practically grew up listening to the soundtrack thanks to lyricist Sammy Buck, a close family friend. With that said, you know I'm giving you a genuinely wholehearted recommendation when I tell you that you are in for a real treat on Wednesday. Check out the latest coverage on Playbill here!

Tickets are currently $25-$35 ($5 off the main dining room with code LYL5) with a $25 food/beverage minimum. The show begins at 9:30 pm, but you can make reservations as early as 8:45 pm. If that is too late for dinner, I hear they have a fabulous chocolate dessert...

Broadway Recap: Realistic Joneses and Bullets Over Broadway

April is one of my most favorite months because it means I get to see many of the new Broadway shows. This Spring is shaping up to be a celebrity-filled, comparatively scandal-less season.

One new show I saw, The Realistic Joneses, starred Toni Collette and Tracy Letts as a middle aged married couple dealing with life and their new "friends" played by Michael C. Hall and Marissa Tomei who enter their lives and stir things up. The play is an interesting take on the saying 'keeping up with the Joneses' because each of these couples has more traits to be repulsed by than jealous of. But maybe that's a statement on life? The grass is always greener, right? The acting was superb, but unfortunately the story was a bit hard to follow at the end. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see Hall out of the serial killer role or observe a particularly chipper Tomei.

(The Realistic Joneses is now open at the Lyceum Theater; 149 W. 45th Street and tickets can be purchased here).

The second show I saw was Bullets Over Broadway, starring Zac Braff in his usual goofball but surprisingly charming and intelligent role. Originally written for the screen by Woody Allen, Bullets is a revival that's all glitter. Dance number after dance number, this show shines with pure entertainment and pizzazz. The plot revolves around a playwright (Braff) who needs someone to back his next show and a mobster who needs a way to please his showgirl girlfriend. Love triangles abound and lines are crossed. The two leading ladies, Marin Mazzie and Betsy Wolfe, are shining lights who perspire talent and really steal the show away from Braff, who is fantastic to watch but owns vocal chops nowhere near as amazing. There's a lot of Tony talk buzzing around this show so get tickets before they become a hot commodity.

(Bullets Over Broadway is now open at the St. James Theater; 246 W. 44th Street and tickets can be purchased here)

Before I saw Bullets, I was invited to the Lantern's Keep, a hideaway of a cocktail bar tucked into the lobby of the Iroquois Hotel, for a pre-show blogger reception. I tried their signature cocktail, The Glass Door, with gin, lemon juice, cucumber, apple and sugar. Yum! We also sampled some of their bar bites, including candied nuts, olives, pancetta wrapped white asparagus, risotto balls (seriously one of my favorite foods!), lamb carpaccio on a potato chip, peanut chicken satay, and ceviche on a cucumber. All was delicious! I'm definitely going to have to remember this place as a pre-theater time filler :)

Stay tuned for more Broadway recaps and be sure to give us your full reviews of any of these shows in the comments below!

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Under My Skin

Take the dashing CEO of America’s leading healthcare provider, a single mom from Staten Island, and an outrageous twist of fate and you've got the makings of a sexy and outrageous new off-Broadway comedy, Under My Skin.

Kirsten Sanderson directs the new off-Broadway comedy about three things we all want but can’t always get: sex, love and healthcare. Tony and Drama Desk-nominee Kerry Butler (“Xanadu,” “Catch Me If You Can”) and film, TV and stage actor Matt Walton (“Burn After Reading,” “One Life to Live”) star in the play that will leave you in stitches. They are joined by actresses Megan Sikora, Allison Strong, Kate Loprest, Dierdre Friel as well as actors Edward James Hyland and Andrew Polk.

Under My Skin is written by the husband and wife writing team Robert Sternin and Prudence Fraser, known for their hit shows “The Nanny,” “Three’s Company,” and “Who’s The Boss?” It’s the uproarious out-of-body experience that brings “he said, she said” to a whole new level and proves a man can’t really understand the opposite sex until he’s walked a mile in someone else’s stilettos.

Good news! I'm giving away a pair of tickets to Under My Skin to one lucky reader. Please use the Rafflecopter form to enter to win below and be sure to follow all instructions!

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to The Bridges of Madison County

Every so often a new musical comes around and completely blows me away. The Bridges of Madison County, a palpable love story based on the book and 1995 movie, is one of those. I was invited to see it last week and became wrapped up in the love triangle of Francesca, her All-American husband Richard, and the "hippie" National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid who whirlwinds into Francesca's life and changes it forever. What would you do if you got a second chance at love?

Songs like "One Second and a Million Miles" and "It All Fades Away" were stuck in my head all weekend; catchy an emotional, but milder and not as sing-song-y as showtunes can often be. Kelli O'Hara (Francesca) is a vision on stage and, especially if you saw her in Nice Work if You Can Get It, is an extremely versatile performer. Steven Pasquale, making is Broadway musical debut, melted my heart a little bit with his rich singing voice, and, oh that hair! The set was simple, yet elegant, and call me weird, made me want to visit rural Iowa.

Good news! I'm giving away a pair of tickets to a Tues-Thurs performance of The Bridges of Madison County now playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre (236 W. 45th St., between Broadway and 8th). The winner will need to redeem his/her tickets for a show before April 3. To enter to win, please use the form below and follow the instructions carefully. If you don't leave the comment requested and subscribe to my blog you cannot be the winner. A winner will be chosen and notified on Friday March 21.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to A Time To Kill

There's something about courtroom dramas that enthrall audiences so much that I've known friends to sit in one place on their couch without moving while watching up to 8 hours of Law and Order, if not more. Judge Judy is a household name, and let's not forget the real life courtroom cases that infiltrate our dinnertime discussions and often (unfortunately) entertain us (I'm looking at you Lindsay Lohan).

So it makes sense that Broadway is hopping on board. A Time to Kill is a new stage adaption of John Grisham's bestselling novel by Tony Award winning playwright Rupert Holmes. The production, directed by Ethan McSweeny, features Sebastian Arcelus, Chike Johnson, Patrick Page, Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins, Emmy Award winner Tom Skerritt, Fred Dalton Thompson, John Douglas Thompson, and Ashley Williams and begins performances September 28 at The John Golden Theatre.

All my readers are in luck! I'm giving away a pair of tickets to A Time To Kill! Winners will be chosen on or around Wednesday 9/18. You have until Wednesday 9/18 at 12 a.m. EST to enter the contest. Good luck!

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Tennessee Williams' The Two-Character Play

Another Off-Broadway show is lighting up it's marquee this fall. Tony Award winner Amanda Plummer (Agnes of God, Pulp Fiction) and Academy Award nominee Brad Dourif (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) will unite their white-hot talents for this highly anticipated production of Tennessee Williams’ The Two-Character Play.

Reality and fantasy are interwoven with terrifying power as two actors on tour – brother and sister – find themselves deserted by their troupe. Faced by an audience expecting a performance, they enact The Two-Character Play. As they dip in and out of performance they find it difficult to differentiate themselves from their roles and reality from illusion. Haunting, provocative, and often funny, The Two-Character Play is one of Tennessee Williams’ most personal – and mystifying – works.

All my readers are in luck! I'm giving away a pair of tickets to The Two Character Play! I'm trying a new method for contest entries. Let me know how you like it!

Winners will be chosen on or around Friday 9/6. You have until Thursday 9/5 at 12 a.m. EST to enter the contest. Good luck!

Inspired by events from his extended Texas family, playwright James Wesley stars as the troubled Bobby alongside his real-life daughter Juli Wesley. The show is being produced by SiriusXM Broadway host Seth Rudetsky and Mary J. Davis.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Romeo and Juliet

You all know the story of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet Capulet is forbidden by her family to be with Orlando Bloom...oops, I mean Romeo Montague. Excuse me, I have no idea where that came from. Now Orlando...excuse me again, Romeo...strives to come up with a plan for the two lovebirds to be together, but tragedy ensues and Orlando and Condola (that's one lucky lady) suffer untimely deaths.

Maybe you didn't pay attention in high school English, but rest assured you will be paying attention (or potentially completely distracted) watching Orlando Bloom (making his Broadway debut) and two-time Tony nominee Condola Rashad play the iconic romantic leads of Romeo and Juliet on Broadway this Fall. The play will open Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, following preview performances from Saturday, August 24, 2013.

Can we also take two seconds to acknowledge that Justin Guarini (of first season American Idol fame) will be playing the part of Paris? The high schooler inside of me is literally jumping for joy.

Don't Hyde From Broadway's Latest Thriller

Broadway's Spring 2013 season is chock full of surprises, but nothing I've seen has been as thrilling as the revival of Jekyll & Hyde. Starring Constantine Maroulis of American Idol fame and the powerful R&B artist Deborah Cox, the show transcends typical theater boundaries while telling the story of a scientist struggling with the duality of life's good and evil aspects. Maroulis plays a suitable Dr. Jekyll but is transformative as Hyde and almost seems to present himself as two different people. Meanwhile, when Cox sings just about anything, you feel yourself unable to even thing about anything else, her voice is just that good.

I had the pleasure of being invited to see the show a few weeks ago with a reception at The Paramount Hotel beforehand. While I wouldn't recommend this show to everyone (ie: children and people looking for a traditional la-dee-da musical), I was definitely entertained and left with much to talk and think about once the curtain fell.

Jekyll & Hyde is only on Broadway as a limited engagement so get your tickets now! Use the discount code HYDE to save up to 30% on tickets through May 26. For Monday - Thursday shows, orchestra/front mezz tickets will be $89 (reg. $125) and for Friday - Sunday shows they will be $99 (reg. $135 - $142). Use this discount by visiting Ticketmaster.com, calling (877) 250-2929 or mention this offer to the Marquis Theatre Box Office (46th St between Broadway and 8th Ave).

Burlesque in a New Light

Nathan Lane is one of those actors whom I would go see in any show, ever, period. He's amazing, and his performance in Lincoln Center Theater's newest show, The Nance, is no exception.

The show takes place in New York City in the 1930s, when burlesque impresarios welcomed the hilarious comics and musical parodies of vaudeville to their decidedly lowbrow niche. A headliner called "the nance" was a stereotypically camp homosexual and master of comic double entendre - usually played by a straight man. In The Nance, Nathan Lane plays Chauncey, the decidedly funny burlesque performer yet rather melancholic middle aged man dealing with a difficult double life. Though the show deals with an intense and somewhat depressing period in our society's past, it will have you laughing out loud and wishing this kind of  burlesque was still a thing.

Directed by 3-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, The Nance also showcases the wonderfully raw and honest Johnny Orsini, who is making his Broadway debut playing Chauncey's lover Ned, Lewis J. Stadlen excellently playing the head performer Efram, and the spunky trio of Cady Huffman, Jenni Barber and Andréa Burns, who play the strippers.

Before the show, I was invited to a buzzmaker event at The Strip House, honestly one of the better pre-theater events I've been to. We were welcomed to the lush venue bedecked in red banquettes and photographs of 1930s burlesque stars (how apropos!)  with a signature Nance-inspired cocktail akin to a passionfruit and orange martini. The passed hors d'oeuvres were excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the crispy shrimp and the bacon and Stilton popovers.

The Nance Cocktail

Spicy Tuna and Cucumber

Golden Beet Rounds

Crispy Shrimp

Crabcakes

Bacon and Stilton Popovers
Steak Crostini

Stomachs full and thirsts quenched, we stuck around for the raffle, though I didn't win anything (my juju must be off), but I did go home with a Nance logo shot glass, a Mac lipstick in a dark and mischievous shade of red called Dubonnet, and delicious homemade potato chips and white chocolate, pistachio and cranberry fudge from Joseph Cuccia Catering.
