AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to The Realistic Joneses

Living in NYC, we often know a little too much about our neighbors. For instance, I live below an elephant on caffeine and in an old apartment, I knew far too much about the coitus preferences of a couple that lived in the building next door. A new show starring (wait for it!) Academy Award nominee Toni Collette (Muriel’s Wedding, Hostages), Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under), Tony Award winner Tracy Letts (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Homeland) and Academy Award Winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler) invites you to delve deeper in the private lives of your neighbors. Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Will Eno and directed by Sam Gold, of Fun Home fame, The Realistic Joneses is sure to be a hot ticket on the Spring roster of Broadway shows.

Good news! I'm giving away 2 passes to the invite-only dress rehearsal of The Realistic Joneses on Wednesday March 12, 2014 at 8pm. The winner will see the show before anyone else! Please only enter if you are able to make this date as no other dates are available for this giveaway. Please use the form below to enter by Thursday 2/13. Good luck!

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to A Time To Kill

There's something about courtroom dramas that enthrall audiences so much that I've known friends to sit in one place on their couch without moving while watching up to 8 hours of Law and Order, if not more. Judge Judy is a household name, and let's not forget the real life courtroom cases that infiltrate our dinnertime discussions and often (unfortunately) entertain us (I'm looking at you Lindsay Lohan).

So it makes sense that Broadway is hopping on board. A Time to Kill is a new stage adaption of John Grisham's bestselling novel by Tony Award winning playwright Rupert Holmes. The production, directed by Ethan McSweeny, features Sebastian Arcelus, Chike Johnson, Patrick Page, Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins, Emmy Award winner Tom Skerritt, Fred Dalton Thompson, John Douglas Thompson, and Ashley Williams and begins performances September 28 at The John Golden Theatre.

All my readers are in luck! I'm giving away a pair of tickets to A Time To Kill! Winners will be chosen on or around Wednesday 9/18. You have until Wednesday 9/18 at 12 a.m. EST to enter the contest. Good luck!

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Romeo and Juliet

You all know the story of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet Capulet is forbidden by her family to be with Orlando Bloom...oops, I mean Romeo Montague. Excuse me, I have no idea where that came from. Now Orlando...excuse me again, Romeo...strives to come up with a plan for the two lovebirds to be together, but tragedy ensues and Orlando and Condola (that's one lucky lady) suffer untimely deaths.

Maybe you didn't pay attention in high school English, but rest assured you will be paying attention (or potentially completely distracted) watching Orlando Bloom (making his Broadway debut) and two-time Tony nominee Condola Rashad play the iconic romantic leads of Romeo and Juliet on Broadway this Fall. The play will open Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, following preview performances from Saturday, August 24, 2013.

Can we also take two seconds to acknowledge that Justin Guarini (of first season American Idol fame) will be playing the part of Paris? The high schooler inside of me is literally jumping for joy.

Don't Hyde From Broadway's Latest Thriller

Broadway's Spring 2013 season is chock full of surprises, but nothing I've seen has been as thrilling as the revival of Jekyll & Hyde. Starring Constantine Maroulis of American Idol fame and the powerful R&B artist Deborah Cox, the show transcends typical theater boundaries while telling the story of a scientist struggling with the duality of life's good and evil aspects. Maroulis plays a suitable Dr. Jekyll but is transformative as Hyde and almost seems to present himself as two different people. Meanwhile, when Cox sings just about anything, you feel yourself unable to even thing about anything else, her voice is just that good.

I had the pleasure of being invited to see the show a few weeks ago with a reception at The Paramount Hotel beforehand. While I wouldn't recommend this show to everyone (ie: children and people looking for a traditional la-dee-da musical), I was definitely entertained and left with much to talk and think about once the curtain fell.

Jekyll & Hyde is only on Broadway as a limited engagement so get your tickets now! Use the discount code HYDE to save up to 30% on tickets through May 26. For Monday - Thursday shows, orchestra/front mezz tickets will be $89 (reg. $125) and for Friday - Sunday shows they will be $99 (reg. $135 - $142). Use this discount by visiting Ticketmaster.com, calling (877) 250-2929 or mention this offer to the Marquis Theatre Box Office (46th St between Broadway and 8th Ave).

Burlesque in a New Light

Nathan Lane is one of those actors whom I would go see in any show, ever, period. He's amazing, and his performance in Lincoln Center Theater's newest show, The Nance, is no exception.

The show takes place in New York City in the 1930s, when burlesque impresarios welcomed the hilarious comics and musical parodies of vaudeville to their decidedly lowbrow niche. A headliner called "the nance" was a stereotypically camp homosexual and master of comic double entendre - usually played by a straight man. In The Nance, Nathan Lane plays Chauncey, the decidedly funny burlesque performer yet rather melancholic middle aged man dealing with a difficult double life. Though the show deals with an intense and somewhat depressing period in our society's past, it will have you laughing out loud and wishing this kind of  burlesque was still a thing.

Directed by 3-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, The Nance also showcases the wonderfully raw and honest Johnny Orsini, who is making his Broadway debut playing Chauncey's lover Ned, Lewis J. Stadlen excellently playing the head performer Efram, and the spunky trio of Cady Huffman, Jenni Barber and AndrĂ©a Burns, who play the strippers.

Before the show, I was invited to a buzzmaker event at The Strip House, honestly one of the better pre-theater events I've been to. We were welcomed to the lush venue bedecked in red banquettes and photographs of 1930s burlesque stars (how apropos!)  with a signature Nance-inspired cocktail akin to a passionfruit and orange martini. The passed hors d'oeuvres were excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the crispy shrimp and the bacon and Stilton popovers.

The Nance Cocktail

Spicy Tuna and Cucumber

Golden Beet Rounds

Crispy Shrimp

Crabcakes

Bacon and Stilton Popovers
Steak Crostini

Stomachs full and thirsts quenched, we stuck around for the raffle, though I didn't win anything (my juju must be off), but I did go home with a Nance logo shot glass, a Mac lipstick in a dark and mischievous shade of red called Dubonnet, and delicious homemade potato chips and white chocolate, pistachio and cranberry fudge from Joseph Cuccia Catering.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Orphans on Broadway

Hold onto your hats. Broadway is getting dark and twisty this Spring. In the new Broadway show Orphans, two orphaned brothers live in their decrepit North Philadelphia row house. They survive by petty thievery and a steady diet of tuna fish and daytime television until the violent older brother decides to kidnap Harold (Alec Baldwin, yes THE Alec Baldwin), a notorious Chicago gangster. Harold soon becomes the force that will forever change their lives.

Written by Lyle Kessler and directed by Daniel Sullivan (Glengarry Glen Ross), Orphans features a critically acclaimed cast including Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, The Mechanic, and Flash Forward if you can remember that far back) and Tom Sturridge (Being Julia, Like Minds, The Boat That Rocked, and On the Road).

The show features a book by Doug Wright (Pulitzer Prize winner, I Am My Own Wife), lyrics by Amanda  Green (Bring It On: The Musical), and music by Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Amanda Green. Directed by Neil Pepe (Speed-The-Plow) with musical staging by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis), it is based on the acclaimed 1997 documentary of the same name by S.R. Bindler, produced by Kevin Morris and Bindler.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Hands on a Hardbody on Broadway

How far would you go for the American dream? In the new musical Hands on a Hardbody, ten Texans test their endurance and stamina in the hot sun by seeing who can keep at least one hand on a brand new truck for the longest in order to win it. I admit, the plot line sounds a bit thin, but it's based off true events and I'm most curious to see how they've managed to turn this story into an entire musical.

A One, Two Punch at Golden Boy

Even after several years in NYC, I still consider it a treat to go to the theater. An even bigger treat still is meeting the cast of a Broadway show and getting to pick their brains a bit.

A few weeks ago I was invited to a preview of Lincoln Center Theater's revival of the play Golden Boy (now open at the Belasco Theater) and a pre-show reception at The Lambs Club across the street. Having never been to The Lambs Club before I was excited as it felt very exclusive. Waitresses milled about with themed drinks and appetizers like yellowfin tuna tartare, spicy veal meatballs and pork belly with puff rice.

Drink Selection

My "Golden" drink had a GIANT ice cube!

Cast members Danny Mastrogiorgio, Danny Burstein, Brad Fleischer, Karl Glusman and Seth Numrich were milling about and couldn't have been nicer if they tried. Established thespian Danny Burstein, whom I loved in Follies, told me he still fears forgetting his lines, while Seth Numrich, who played the lead Joe Bonaparte, told me he trained at a real boxing gym in Venice, CA and then in Brooklyn to get in tip-top fighting shape for the show.

Danny Burstein and Me

Seth Numrich and Me
Also on display were sketches of the costumes designed by Catherine Zuber. According to a long-told story of an actress haunting the Belasco Theater, the designer included a blue dress which actress Yvonne Strahovski (of Dexter fame) wears as Lorna Moon.

Costume Sketches

Golden Boy closed January 20 but told the story of a young boxer who rises to fame and the love and family he gains and loses along the way.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Chaplin the Musical

If there's one man who invented and then re-invented the movie business, it was the late, great Charlie Chaplin. His most well known character, the Little Tramp, has warmed his way into many a family's memories and hearts, but the little-known story behind the character is perhaps more intriguing, and ultimately more heartwarming than I ever could have thought.

The new show Chaplin: The Musical stars Rob McClure as the legendary silent film star and features a book by three-time Tony Award® winner Thomas Meehan (Hairspray, The Producers, Annie) and Christopher Curtis, and music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis. Everything from the costumes and make-up, to the set and the brilliant choreography contributes to one of the best new musicals I've seen in a while. The show had such an effect on me that when the curtain fell, I immediately went and added at least 10 Chaplin movies to my Netflix queue.

All my readers are in luck! I'm giving away a pair of tickets to Chaplin: The Musical! There are 4 easy ways to win, and each comment counts as an entry. Be sure to leave your email in each comment so that I can contact you if you are the winner.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Before you get too excited, I must tell you Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a doozy of a show. At 3 hours long with not one but two intermissions, it basically details a family in decline, touching on infidelity and insanity all at the same time. If I've still got you, listen to me when I say you must go see this show.

The show stars Tony Award® and Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts (of August: Osage County fame) and Tony® nominee Amy Morton as America's infamous sparring couple, George and Martha, in the Steppenwolf production. Directed by Tony® nominee Pam Mackinnon (Clybourne Park)—Virginia Woolf celebrates its 50th Broadway anniversary with a spectacularly moving performance that will pretty much make you question every relationship you've ever encountered, insightfully of course.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 4 Tickets to Clybourne Park

The Spring 2012 Broadway season is in full swing with several new shows in previews anticipating April openings. One I'm particularly excited about is the Pulitzer Prize and Olivier Award winning Clybourne Park. Opening April 19, the play explores the concepts of race, realty and the volatile values of each. Despite the somewhat heavy nature of the story, Clybourne Park is said to be uproariously funny and brilliantly acted.

All my readers are in luck! I'm giving away 2 pairs of tickets to see Clybourne Park on Broadway! The tickets must be picked up at the box office the day of the show. $29 Tickets for Leap of Faith on Broadway

It's not often that a leap day comes around, so of course it should be a reason to celebrate and give discounts! A new Broadway show is doing just that! Today only, you can get $29 tickets to the show Leap of Faith, which stars Raul Esparza as Jonas Nightingale, the lead singer of a performing troupe that's, let's just say, less than honorable. However, he'll tell the story of how he found redemption through a strong-willed woman and a spirited boy.

Discounted tickets are available for the first week of previews April 3-7, and to get them you must either visit broadwaybox or call 212-947-8844 and use code LF229LP, or visit the box office at the St. James Theater (246 West 44th Street) today only.

AWESOME GIVEAWAY: 2 Tickets to Nice Work If You Can Get It

No decade will ever be able to compare to the roaring 20's. From flappers to bootleggers, playboys to corrupt politicians (oh wait, we have those), the 20's were a time of extravagance and revelry. However, almost a century later, heavy hitters Matthew Broderick (The Producers) and Kelli O'Hara (South Pacific) along with director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes) and writer Joe DiPietro (Memphis) are taking on the 20's with the Gershwin's Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Having seen Mr. Broderick on Broadway before, I'm super excited for this show as he's an amazing performer. Also, by the list of tall names on the rest of the cast and the crew, it seems this show is sure to be a smash. Previews begin March 29th with an opening night of April 24.

All my readers are in luck! I'm giving away 2 pairs of tickets to see Nice Work If You Can Get It on Broadway! The tickets must be picked up at the box office the day of the show.
